Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian is a traveling sculpture that was on display in Seoul.
A student walked right up and chowed down on the piece that first sold for $120,000.
According to a spokesperson at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, South Korea,
The student told the museum he ate it because he was hungry.”
Scroll through the series below to watch the incident unfold (unpeel?).
Rather than littering, the student, Noh Huyn-soo, placed the peel back on the wall.
This is not the first time someone ate the sculpture. When the piece premiered and sold at Art Basel in 2019, performance artist David Datuna performed an art intervention he called Hungry Artist and ate the sculpture. The banana was replaced later that day. You know what they say in art: Good artists copy, great artists steal! Noh did both!
Fun fact: the banana typically gets replaced every two to three days. The museum provided no insight on the banana-selecting process.
The museum said Maurizio Cattelan had no response.
