Stop the Presses! Cicely Tyson as Possible Mags in Catching Fire

By James St. James on June 14, 2012 3:24 pm

Lainey Gossip continues to have the inside scoop on the Catching Fire casting process, saying today that even though Garrett Hedlund is still in the the lead to play Finnick, they’ve also brought in Sam Clafin to read for the part. Sam, you’ll recall, was ALMOST hot as Prince William in Snow White and the Huntsman, but then turned out to be TOTALLY NOT, so I’m sticking with Garrett on the Finnick front. HOWEVER, then Lainey oh-so-casually dropped THIS bombshell: “My sources tell me they are seriously considering Cicely Tyson for the role of Mags.” Which is the MOST FABULOUS casting news since Faye Dunaway was cast as Joan Crawford, if you ask me. Mags, according to the Hunger Games Wiki, is described as “an eighty-year-old woman who babbles every time she talks. Katniss believes it is because of a possible stroke she may have had in the past.” A couple months ago, I suggested they ought to get Kim Cattrall for the part, and GET HER THAT OSCAR, damnit. Or possibly cast the woman who played Miss Blankenship on Mad Men. Anybody but Betty White. Please no Betty White. I had never EVEN CONSIDERED Cicely Tyson, but my GOD that would be PERFECT. She’s been ancient since I was a child, OF COURSE she could play Mags. She could play Mags in HER SLEEP. People need to start tweeting about this idea AND MAKE IT HAPPEN!
