The Star Trek universe has always been inclusive, and now Star Trek: Discovery will break new ground with two gender-inclusive characters. One of them identifies as nonbinary, and the other as transgender.
According to StarTrek.com, Adira, played by Blu del Barrio, will have a storyline with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). Cruz and Rapp play a married couple on the series, itself a groundbreaking event.
Gray, played by Ian Alexander, is interested in joining bodies with another being called a Trill, an irreversible lifelong decision where the Trill fuses to the hosts nervous system to share memories and even personalities. According to the announcement, Gray will have to adapt when his life takes an unexpected turn.
