Fenton can’t believe we didn’t link to Soylent Green in our brief Richard Fleischer obit this morning:
Soylent Green, one of the first dystopian sci-fi movies, paints a nightmare world groaning with overpopulation after the ecosystem has been destroyed by global warming. Only the very very rich eat real food – steaks, tomatoes, strawberry jam. Everyone else subsists on Soylent Green, a snack food supposedly made out of plankton harvested from the oceans.
Plans are afoot to remake the 1972 pic – which feels strangely relevant today – and there is even a script floating around, although it apparently doesn’t end with the film’s legendary last line revealing the product’s true ingredients. Instead, it goes on to find, in the ruins of civilization, a man-made green arcadia, a kind of Noah’s Ark for a lucky few survivors of some dastardly plan to wipe out billions!
