John Mulaney, former SNL writer, hosted Saturday Night Live on Halloween last night and delivered a monologue that has gotten some intense internet discussions going.
Yet another opening monologue controversy. Mulaney said, in part,
“So there’s two elderly men and you’re supposed to pick your favorite of the elderly men
You can put it in the mail or you can go and write down which elderly man you like and we’ll add them all up. Then we might have the same elderly man or we might have a new elderly man.
But just rest assured, no matter what happens, nothing much will change in the United States.
The rich will continue to prosper while the poor languish. Families will be upended by mental illness and drug addiction. Jane Lynch will continue to book lots of projects.”
There might be a grain of truth there, more than a grain, but saying there is little difference between Trump and Biden equates to what a lot of people said about Hillary Clinton 4 years ago.
And if she were POTUS would there be 230,000 dead of COVID, kids in cages, LGBTQ rights under fire, right wing Supreme Court judges, etc…?
Many took to social media to slam Mulaney.
Activist Charlotte Clymer wrote,
“‘Nothing will change’ from the outcome of the election? Really, John Mulaney? Even as a joke? Okay then.”
Some said how “liberals” missed the joke. Others, like Jamie Losurdo said on Facebook it was his own political affiliation and NYer privilege that prompted it,
“Mulaney was a huge Bernie [Sanders] supporter but I haven’t heard him diss other candidates on the Dems side. What extra annoyed me about his monologue was that in his Time Square skit later on, he literally ended it with ‘it doesn’t matter how you vote because it’s New York.’ I am very disappointed.”
But clearly, four more years of Trump will change your life, unless you’re rich, straight, white and male. I think there’s a name for it…
