After a high school drama club’s production of Alien: The Play went viral, the film’s star Sigourney Weaver made a surprise visit to the school to celebrate the show on the 40th anniversary of Alien.
Weaver told the North Bergen High School Drama Club students backstage after their Friday encore performance,
“I am representing all of the ‘Alien’ fans, all over the universe who think what you’re doing is so cool.”
Students had performed the play on March 19 and March 22 but it quickly garnered social media attention. The official Twitter account for the Fox (now Disney) film took notice —for their production and replicated sets and costumes, which were all created from recycled materials.
The production’s Twitter account tweeted a video of Weaver going backstage and applauding the students who were stunned to see her with one student shouting as others clapped wildly,
“You’re my childhood hero. I can’t believe you’re here right now.”
Weaver had already expressed her praise for the production in a video,
“I saw a bit of your production of Alien, and I just want to say it looked incredible… You put so much heart and soul into that. The alien, I must say, looked very real to me.
I just wanted to send our compliments. Not only from me but from James Cameron and the original screenwriter, Walter Hill. We all say bravo. Well done. “And just one more thing — you know the alien might still be round, so when you’re opening your locker, just do it very slowly….”
Director Ridley Scott also praised the students in letter celebrating their,
“creativity, imagination and determination.
My hat comes off to all of you for your creativity, imagination, and determination to produce such an ambitious show. Limitations often produce the best results because imagination and determination can surpass any shortfalls and determine the way forward — ALWAYS.”
Scott suggested the students perform his Oscar-winning Gladiator as their next production. and supplied the funds to pay for the encore performance.
My favorite director @Sir_RidleyScott just gave the North Bergen Drama Club his official endorsement for “Alien: The Play”! Thank you Mr. Scott for making Alien and allowing us to share it with a new generation! Gladiator: The Play in 2020! YES! pic.twitter.com/f5jUzO4bzv— Perfecto Cuervo (@CuervoPerfecto) March 28, 2019
Sigourney Weaver showing up at a New Jersey high school production of Alien was more inspiring and American than anything Trump has ever done. Trump will only appear at Klan rallies and openings of his own golf courses; President Ripley has a nice ring to it#SigourneyWeaver— Paul Rudnick (@PaulRudnickNY) April 28, 2019
