Shia LaBeouf is getting LOTS of attention for his role in The Tax Collector, the upcoming movie from director David Ayer.
LaBeouf really went all out even getting majorly inked for the role, but some people were complaining about LaBeouf’s casting even before the movie is released.
Some feel LaBeouf is a miscast for the role of a “tax collectors” who picks up taxes for local gangs, most of which are heavily Latino in the film.
Some have called it “brownface,” which director David Ayer says is not the case. LaBeouf is playing a white character in the movie and Ayer said on Twitter when asked if this was another case of a white person playing a POC.
“Really important answer – Shia is playing a whiteboy who grew up in the hood. This is a Jewish dude playing a white character. Also the only white dude in the movie.“
While LaBeouf is the most well-known cast member in this movie and has been getting the bulk of the attention for the film, he’s not actually the lead.
Actor Bobby Soto is the lead. He previously had small parts in Narcos: Mexico, S.W.A.T. and other TV shows, and a bigger one in The Quarry.
“Bobby Soto is the lead. Shia has a supporting role. He’s the only non POC cast member. It’s a small indie movie and a lot of good people did great work.“
Ayer has a pretty good track record with diverse casting a big screen Latino superhero with El Diablo, played by Jay Hernandez. He also is also known for directing Will Smith in Netflix’s Bright and he’s written movies like The Fast and the Furious (a co-writing effort), Training Day and End of Watch, which he also directed.
Best way to find out what it’s all about? See the movie. The Tax Collector is out August 7.

Oh hey, another movie w/ Latinos and Blacks in glorified gang culture on steroids that reinforces stereotypes & fears for white folks & promotes the cop mentality that “it’s a battlefield out there.” Sigh…..Hollywood, come on. We don’t need this right now. https://t.co/NDk83cql0c— Memo Torres (@el_tragon_de_LA) July 2, 2020

I grew up hood and I’m a whiteboy. Chicano culture is inclusive – I’ve seen whiteys, Asians, Blacks, Filipinos all putting in work for the hood. It’s part of street culture. https://t.co/PS6foJwQXV— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 1, 2020
Bobby Soto, Jay, Conejo and Shia. Jay is Conejo’s best friend and showed Shia the ropes for his character. Bobby plays the lead, Shia is his back in the day best friend. #TaxCollector 🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/SXHCUXtqRu— David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) July 7, 2020
