What is it with the Virgin Mary? Maybe she has nothing to wear. But she lives to make appearances in public toilets and trailer parks, on grilled cheese sandwiches, as ceiling damage, and, as she did not long ago, as a stain on an expressway underpass wall in Chicago. Police say it’s salt from the Kennedy Expressway overhead, but the faithful know their Madonna when they see her (especially when the stain-like image is compared side-by-side with the real Mary, above) and will not hear otherwise even if it means closing the underpass and setting up a makeshift shrine. Obdulia Delgado said she was driving home along Fullerton Avenue after getting off work at St. Elizabeth Hospital when she saw what she believes to be the Virgin Mary on the wall. She quickly pulled over and examined the form, and then began praying. “Monday through Friday I go to school and Saturday and Sunday I work, so since I haven’t been able to go to church, I asked her, ‘Please help me with school because I’m having my finals,’ but I felt like she was like, ‘If you can come to me, I’m going to go to you,'” Delgado said.
