From T Magazine: “Lagerfeld fully embraced the vividly colored architectural pieces of the Memphis designers, an international group led by Ettore Sottsass. In the early ’80s, with the help of Putman, he assembled an exuberant set in his vast Monte Carlo penthouse. The floors were black rubber, the walls gray (hung with nudes by Newton), and everything in between popped with color. ‘I really loved it,’ he says of the ultrasophisticated apartment, situated in one of the highest towers in the principality. ‘I had that look for five years, and then suddenly it was like a dress from another era. It was overmodern.’ He also owned a villa nearby called La Vigie, but the Memphis pieces didn’t look right there either. ‘I sold the collection after eight or nine years because I thought in storage it wasn’t improving,’ he says. He still owns the penthouse, but he let La Vigie go. He clearly isn’t possessive about his possessions. ‘I can have remorse, darling,’ he says with a twinkle, ‘but no regrets.'” Here are some selections from the Sotheby’s October 1991 catalog.
