Cindy Sheehan, who became an anti-war activist after her son was killed during the Iraq war under the Bush Administration, was at a protest march in DC this weekend where she labeled President Obama a “war criminal” and called for his arrest. Sheehan was then arrested shortly afterwards for failure to obey a lawful order from police to clear the sidewalk.
It’s hard not to have sympathy for Cindy Sheehan. The loss of her son is obviously inconsolable. And though I may disagree and take issue with her views on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I do give her credit for understanding where to place the blame for our continued presence there. Sadly and far too often the military and members of the Armed Forces are made scapegoats and mocked or demeaned as brutal warmongers by anti-war proponents. But as a military mother herself, I think Sheehan understands more than most, that soldiers do not do anything unless they are ordered to do it by their leaders. Sheehan spoke out against Bush at a time when few others would, and now she is keeping consistent and taking on Obama. I may not agree with her but I absolutely respect her. (Photo by Richard Block)
