It debuted last night streaming, online – and on Showtime on regular old TV, Who Is America? The spoof series starts off with an irritated Bernie Sanders being grilled by a disguised Sasha Barn Cohen. He is more unrecognizable as motorized scooter-bound, Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr. of Truthbrary.org interviewing Sarah Palin. After the ruse was exposed Palin tried to go after Cohen/Ruddick but the dimwit is no match.
(Do check out the Truthbrary, I’m SURE it’s often mistaken for a real hard right site.)
Showtime describes his new series,
“The seven-episode series will explore the diverse individuals, from the infamous to the unknown across the political and cultural spectrum, who populate our unique nation.”
• See Dick Cheney signing a waterboarding kit!
• Watch Congressman Joe Walsh receiving an award for “Significant Contributions To The State Of Israel”!
But is it really that funny in 2018. If you loved Borat & Bruno you might like it. For me, I can never watch this brand of “embarrassment comedy”. A scripted Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm I can take, but really people getting tricked always makes me cringe.
These targets deserve it and I hope they were and are humiliated but his rebuttable to Palin in print (below) to me is funny (even the first line “Dear Vice President Palin”)
I’ll confess never know what the series is like because,
a. I don’t have Showtime anymore
b. as I said above, I can’t bare to watch
Deadline‘s Dominic Patten has this to say in his review,
“Added together, all this finds former clown student Cohen and the numerous characters he’s created for Who Is America? slithering further and further down the cultural drainpipe. It might be shielded under the tattered guise of exploring the American divide, and it might therefore appeal to some as funny. Also, accepting that there is at least one mark born every minute, as con-men say, it might entice others as a necessary shiv to whomever they don’t like on the political spectrum.
The fact is, Cohen shares with President Trump the ability to sucker Sarah Palin, and, like the former Celebrity Apprentice host, is all about playing entirely to his base. Which means the shtick of Who Is America? is simply to watch stuffed shirts fall over on the banana peels placed in their self-satisfied way, again and again. Nothing more, and often less.”
See what at YOU think. Who Is America? is on Showtime at 10PM EST.
