Dateline California: The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals will decide today whether to review the three-judge panel that overturned Proposition 8’s ban on same-sex marriage in California. You’ll remember that the panel ruled 2 to 1 against the voter-approved marriage ban on the grounds it was unconstitutional and served no purpose other than to “lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians.” The sponsors of the Proposition appealed and asked for a larger panel to review the case. Now, if the court agrees to review the ruling, a panel of 11 judges would convene and could take more than a year to announce a new ruling. Meanwhile, if the 9th Court decides against a new ruling, expect the sponsors of Prop 8 to plead before the Supreme Court. Will we ever be able to relax?

UPDATE: Good news. Dealing yet another blow to California’s Proposition 8, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today declined a request for an en blanc hearing by a larger panel of judges. (See story here)
