Oh, those wacky Russians. America’s new besties.
An upcoming Russian reality show called Game2: Winter will strand 30 contestants in the -40 degree Siberian wilderness for nine months with the surviving winner receiving a $1.6m prize. It will stream 24/7 online.
“Each contestant gives consent that they could be maimed, even killed,” reads an advert. “Everything is allowed. Fighting, alcohol, murder, rape, smoking, anything.”
There will be no crew. Instead, each contestant will also have their own personal recording device, and 2,000 cameras will be dotted around a 900 hectare landscape where bears and wolves are likely to be living.
Says producer Yevgeny Pyatkovsky:
“Imagine: a forest. The contestants arrive there on July 1 after a short training period. Each will have 3-4 months before first cold snaps of winter to construct a shelter. They can live separately or join up and form teams. You should also keep in mind that this will be a real forest, with dangerous wildlife and harmful insects. Of course there will be some safety precautions in place, but it would still take about half an hour to reach the area where the show will take place by helicopter. And it will be about minus 40 degrees (Celsius) in winter – imagine what it takes to go fishing during that time. The contestants won’t only have to build a shelter, but to forage enough supplies to last through winter,” he explained
Contestants will each sign a waiver acknowledging that they might be raped or killed but the rules also state that police are free to arrest anyone who commits a crime on the show. “You must understand that the police will come and take you away,” the rules state. “We are on the territory of Russia, and obey the laws of the Russian Federation.” Willing participants need to be 18 and “mentally sane” to compete.
I mean…. What could go wrong?
