On the latest episode of The Graham Norton Show, broadcast on June 22 in Britain, and shown last night in North America via BBC2, Rupert Everett revealed that he is “pinching himself” at the success of his new film The Happy Prince, in which he stars as gay icon Oscar Wilde.
The 59-year-old, actor, who wrote and directed the movie, said:
“I am thrilled, I’m pinching myself. When I was making it I thought ‘Never again’. But now I am bursting with ideas.”
The actor, who admitted he has always been known a “bit of a flake”, spoke of his surprise at the fruition of the project, which was 10 years in the making:
“I did it because I wasn’t getting any parts. I had to be proactive as an actor, otherwise I would have been left on the shelf. It took 10 years to make it happen and historically I have been known as a bit of a flake so it’s remarkable that I held on to it for so long.”
Plus, the actor, who shared the sofa with Mamma Mia! 2: Here We Go Again stars Cher and Christine Baranski, referenced a hilarious story recounted by Baranski.
According to the Emmy Award-winning star of The Good Wife and The Good Fight, Sarah Silverman once told her that her actor boyfriend Michael Sheen (Masters Of Sex) refers to his penis as “The Great Christine Baranski”.
Everett said that he wore a fat suit for The Happy Prince. He wore it first in the stage version, titled The Judas Kiss, where:
“It had a low-hanging bum, moobs and my very own “Great Christina Baranski’’ before I realized that the people in the front few rows could focus on nothing else so I had it cut down to size!”
Baranski told the group:
“Sarah Silverman told me that Michael Sheen refers to his penis as ‘The Great Christine Baranski’, I have no idea why. ‘I’d like to meet him one day and ask him what was he thinking. Perhaps it’s because of my long-lasting career.”
“Or maybe that you’re long and thin!”
Cher has admitted that she was initially offended at the idea of playing Meryl Streep’s mother in Mamma Mia! 2: Here We Go Again. Cher:
“I am older than her…. by four years!”
Cher claims that she didn’t even really have a choice:
“My agent called me and said: ‘You’re in the new Mamma Mia film’ and then hung up.”
