Of course, RuPaul has dominated the Dance Club Songs chart as well. The iconic “Supermodel (You Better Work)” reached No. 2 on Dance Club Songs and No. 45 on the Hot 100 in 1993. The album Supermodel of the World hit No. 109 on the Billboard 200 that year. Mama Ru also has 13 Dance Club Songs hits to his credit, including two No. 1’s: “Back to My Roots” and “A Shade Shady (Now Prance).”
[The album is] called Butch Queen because I’m really paying homage to drag,” RuPaul says. “You know, drag queens are like the Marines of the LGBT movement. Drag queens show up, they suit up, and they’re ready to serve. Butch Queen is really paying homage to that. It’s as if I had a vogue ball, this album would be the soundtrack to it.
