10) RIP Hollywood Mega-Manager Sandy Gallin
Our very own Tom Campbell started his career in Hollywood fresh out of college working as Sandy Gallin‘s protege Barry Josephson‘s assistant, and he has the amazing stories to prove it! Sandy helped to make the 1980s in Hollywood one of the most glamorous and decadent eras Tinseltown has ever experienced. Sandy passed away last Friday, April 21 at the age of 76.
9) Lost City of Z
James St. James recently watched Lost City of Z starring Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, and Sienna Miller. The movie describes real events about British explorer Percy Fawcett – who made several attempts to find an ancient lost city in the Amazon and may be the inspiration for Indiana Jones. Lost City of Z is in theaters nation-wide.
8) Unicorn-ucopia!
The Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino is just the latest to join in the Unicorn food trend after Unicorn barf, Unicorn toast, and Unicorn bagels, but had you even heard of the Unicorn food trend? Is this all just “an edible excuse for an instagram post?” Purely visual with no nutritional value? And where did this Unicorn trend start? You’ll have to listen to find out.
7) The Los Angeles Riots: 25 Years Later
It’s been 25 years since the 1992 riots that shook the city of Los Angeles and the entire United States. Tom was the only one of us living in Los Angeles at the time, and he shared his experiences with us. We’ve also uploaded WOW’s documentary about the riots called LA Stories in remembrance of the riots. Watch it above.
6) Strike a Pose Documentary Revisited
We discuss the recent documentary about Madonna‘s dancers during her Blonde Ambition tour and the iconic documentary Truth or Dare called Strike a Pose. The men filed a suit against Madonna for infringing on their personal lives, but the lawsuit was thrown out. Did she or are they just biting the hand that feeds? Strike a Pose is currently streaming on Netflix.
5) BBC 2 and Boy George’s Save Me From Suburbia
From the video description:
British pop star Boy George recalls, revisits and assesses how the 1970’s moulded the person and artist he has become. This is his musical, social and sexual coming of age, when he discovered the power of his own sexuality before setting about turning that persona into a popstar. Set against a backdrop of social discord, disenfranchisement and sexual repression, the seventies was also conversely the decade that revelled in colour and creative chaos, giving the world glam rock, disco and punk, and the young George O’Dowd was at the birth of them all. The documentary includes contributions from contemporaries like Martin Degville (Sigue Sigue Sputnik), Andy Polaris (Animal Nightlife), DJ Princess Julia and popstar Marilyn. This is, as George said, ‘the last ever bonkers decade’, and it totally and completely shaped him.
Fenton says it’s uncanny how similar his and Boy George’s experiences were growing up in 1970s UK. Watch Save Me from Suburbia posted above.
4) Bill Nye Science HERO
Bill Nye is an awesome guy. You may remember him as the kid-friendly scientist from his 90s show Bill Nye the Science Guy. He’s back and still teaching us science in his new Neflix series Bill Nye Saves the World, but the Bill Nye of today is more like Captain Planet – slaying climate deniers left & right like in the above video! We love you, Bill Nye!
3) Alexis Del Lago is a LIVING LEGEND!
The ever-alluring drag legend Alexis Del Lago has been beguiling clubgoers for decades. James remembers meeting her in the ’80s and even then she seemed a dazzling relic from an earlier age. If you’re coming to RuPaul’s DragCon this weekend (GET YOUR TICKETS!), make SURE you see James’ panel with Alexis and Transparent producer and WOWlebrity Zackary Drucker!
2) Judith Lieber’s Brilliant Blinged-Out Bags
Judith Lieber‘s blinged out clutch bags are a staple on red carpets, and they may even be the first examples of modern pop art, but do you know how Judith Lieber’s empire began? You may be surprised. If you’re in New York City, make sure to take in the exhibition Judith Lieber: Crafting a New York Story at the Museum of Arts & Design through August 6.
1) Sleep is the New Status Symbol
Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher claimed to only get five hours a night back in the 1980s because sleep was OUT OUT OUT! Lucky for us in 2017, sleep is the NEW status symbol! Read all about it in the New York Times!
Listen in at 4:00PM EST and again at 4:00 PST (7 PM EST) on SiriusXM!
And be sure to give your ears the gift of THE WOW REPORT on Radio Andy SiriusXM EVERY Friday.
Do something this weekend that makes YOU go WOW!!!
