RIP: The Iconic Ms Colombia Was Found Dead at Riis Beach

By James St. James on October 5, 2018 11:35 am

The New York Daily News is reporting that the body of beloved Queens icon Ms Colombia aka Osvaldo Gomez, 64, was found about 3:30AM near Beach 149th St. in Queens. There were no signs of trauma and she is believed to have drowned. At this time, no foul play is suspected, but an autopsy is being performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

City Councilmember Daniel Dromm called Gomez, “an iconic figure” in the LGBT community the city at large.

“She was beloved by all who saw her in the streets, at parks and in the neighborhood wearing her colorful outfits and a bird on her shoulder,” he said in a statement. “Her cheerfulness and ability to bring a smile to the faces of all who met her will be missed by all New Yorkers.”

“While life did not always treat Ms. Colombia with all the respect she was due, New Yorkers will remember Ms. Colombia as a hero to everyone,” Dromm said.

“May this amazing soul who all he wanted to do was entertain and make people laugh Rest in Peace Forever,” wrote an anonymous poster to the Brownstoner website.

A Youtube commenter has said that Ms. Colombia will be remembered and loved at a vigil at the Jackson Heights Post Office this evening at 7pm. 78-02 37th Ave., Jackson Heights, Queens, NY 11372.

Below, a docu-short tells the story of how she moved to Queens from Colombia in 1975. In the ’80s she was diagnosed with #HIV and began living her life “day by day.”

My heart is with everyone from Queens who mourns Ms. Colombia. A Jackson Heights staple, I remember seeing them walking down Roosevelt Ave and at some point realizing how rare it was to feel that free. Ms. Colombia was one of the first reasons I truly understood why my hometown of Queens was the most special and amazing place in the world. They were truly an inspiration to how I formed my sense of self and strength in individuality. My grandmother had spoken to Ms. Colombia a few times and was amazed at the story woven by a fellow Colombian expatriate. She had seen them within the last year at a lunch spot and noticed they were more quiet and less festively dressed. I can only hope that they were to go in a peaceful manner, and that they didn’t feel alone and unloved. One of the few things New Yorkers can agree on is they will be missed. #restinpower #mscolombia #jacksonheights #queens

I saw a photo with Ms. Colombia at the Governors Island Art Fair last weekend and remembered I hadn’t seen her in a parade in a long time. The middle photo is from Cleico Lira’s La Pieta project. My photos are from last year’s Easter Parade, my last photos of this unique New Yorker. She missed a lot of parades after that including Queens Pride and the Colombian Parade in Jackson Heights where she lived so it wouldn’t even have been an effort. There have always been false reports of her dying but the worst news finally became true. At age 64, she was found at Riis Beach early yesterday. You will be truly missed 💔 Other photos I have taken can be seen under the following hashtags: #oswaldogomez #ripmscolombia #mscolombia #misscolombia #lapaisa #riposwaldogomez #ripmisscolombia #ladygagasgrandmother #thatguy™️ #thatguy #nyc #newyorkcity
