Ja’Net DuBois, best known for playing Willona Woods on the groundbreaking sitcom Good Times, has died at her home in Glendale, California. DuBois also co–wrote and sang The Jeffersons theme “Movin’ on Up.”
Tributes from friends and fans have been pouring in.
Janet Jackson, who played Penny, the adopted daughter of Ja’Net’s character on Good Times, wrote:
I am so very saddened to hear my longtime friend Ja’Net DuBois has passed away. I saw first hand how she broke stereotypes and changed the landscape for Black women in entertainment. I’m grateful in recent years I had a chance to see her and create more lasting memories.
BernNadette Stanis (Thelma on Good Times) said in a video, “Rest In Peace Ja’Net DuBois. We had so many wonderful memories on Good Times.”
Good Times creator Norman Lear wrote, Ja’Net DuBois was all light and will be missed. I love that she wrote the theme song for her passing, “Movin’ on Up.”
