According to TMZ, comedian Garry Shandling has died of unknown causes. Shandling started in Hollywood as a writer for Sanford and Son and Welcome Back Kotter. In 1985, he made the groundbreaking meta-comedy It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. This was followed by Shandling’s greatest creative achievement, the HBO late-night parody The Larry Sanders Show, THE best talk show parody ever. Could never really watch another talk show as a steady diet after it.
“I’m dating a woman now who, evidently, is unaware of it.“
In the years since Larry Sanders went off the air, Shandler acted in movies, starring in What Planet Are You From and Town & Country, and playing a corrupt senator in the Marvel Movie Universe. Shandling was not known to be suffering from any illness at the time of his death. He was 66.
He just did Jerry Seinfeld‘s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, with the now sad title, “It’s Great That Garry Shandling Is Still Alive”. You can watch it here. And here he is with Jeffrey Tambor and the late Robin Williams on The Larry Sanders Show. Comedy gold. You gotta laugh to keep from cryin’. Watch.
