Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff, France’s most famous twins, have both died within six days of each other. The 72-year old TV stars and science aficionados had not been vaccinated for COVID.
The Bogdanoff brothers were a pair of eccentrics, descended from Austrian nobility.
Feted for their initial Saturday afternoon TV programme Temps X which ran from 1979, they were synonymous for years with popular science and were part of public life for the rest of their lives.
Their programme on TF1 was for years seen in some ways as highlighting cutting-edge technology, according to Le Monde, which described them as icons from a kitsch period of culture. Temps X showcased other TV shows such as Doctor Who, The Prisoner and Star Trek, with guests including electronic music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre.
While the twins were superstars in France and the subject of a complex academic dispute called The Bogdanoff Affair, they also had a life of their own in English-language internet culture as the subject of a series of memes related to conspiracy theories and, more recently, cryptocurrency. Getting “Bogpilled” in online subcultures means to buy into a number of conspiracies allegedly involving the twins that sound as if they are from the realm of science fiction.
Both twins insisted they had not had plastic surgery, botox, or fillers, but were instead subjected to radiation and other cosmic forces that changed their appearance over time.
Congrats to them both for living such remarkable lives on their own terms!
