Now he’s not there. Paul Atkinson, guitarist for Sixties Brit-invasion band, the Zombies, died last week of liver and kidney disease, at UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center. He was 58. English-born Atkinson met Rod Argent and Hugh Grundy at St. Albans School and in 1963, with Colin Blunstone and Paul Arnold, formed the jazzy rock band that would have three hit singles in the US: “She’s Not There,” “Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season.” After the band broke up in 1967, Atkinson took up residence in Los Angeles, becoming an A&R executive in the recording industry. He signed ABBA. Earlier this year, he received the President’s Merit Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences at a benefit Zombies-reunion concert at the House of Blues. Anyone know which one he is in this wiggy press photo?
