Ed Koch, arguably the most New York of all the New York mayors (1976-1982), died very early this morning of congestive heart failure in a Manhattan hospital. He was 88. Koch had been hospitalized Monday, the day before Koch, a documentary about him, premiered in the City. He had complained of trouble breathing and other ailments, and it was the latest of several hospitalizations for the former mayor in recent months. Not to be crass, but as is the case with many famous figures both living and dead, there is a World of Wonder connection. Back in 1991, WOW produced a short-lived, somewhat oddball TV show called Manhattan Cable that aired on Channel 4 in the UK, hosted by Laurie Pike. In the episode posted here, then Mayor of New York Ed Koch explains, in that chatty manner he had, how a piece of Chinese barbecue lodged in his throat and inspired him to make Heimlich Maneuver posters mandatory in all New York restaurants.
