Cammie King Conlon, who played the doomed daughter of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at her home in California. She was 76. Besides playing the willful little Bonnie Blue Butler (DON’T JUMP BONNIE! YOU JUST LEARNED TO RIDE SIDESADDLE!) she was also the voice of Faline in Bambi (1942). This brings the surviving cast members of GWTW down to a small number. That horrible bitch Olivia deHavilland (Melanie), Ann Rutherford (Carreen), Alicia Rhett (India Wilkes), Mary Anderson (Maybelle Merriwether), Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes), and Patrick Curtis (Beau as an infant) are all still with us.
Phyllis Douglas, who played a younger version of Bonnie Blue, died in May at the age of 73. Bad year to be a Bonnie Blue, I guess. Read the Boston Globe’s obituary of Conlon here, and watch this terribly touching video tribute to Rhett and Bonnie here, then let’s all have a good cry.
