Gidget, the Chihuahua who had the whole country using Spanish at the local Taco Bell, died yesterday from a stroke at age 16. The chain’s Chihuahua campaign was developed in 1997 and the first spokesdog was played by a stud named Dinky who lip-synched the catchphrase “Yo quiero Taco Bell” to much protest from the Hispanic community, who thought the ads smacked of stereotyping. When Gidget later replaced Dinky, she made the role her own – and she was so convincing as a perro masculino that we never once noticed she didn’t have a pinga.
