The emerging rapper Roderick Anthony Burton aka Dolla was shot to death yesterday afternoon while waiting for his car in the valet area of the Beverly Center’s parking garage. He was 21. Dolla was signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik label, and had flown to LA from Atlanta to work on his first album. The alleged shooter, a 20-year-old man who had followed the rapper from LAX after the two had engaged in an argument, was later apprehended by police at the airport as he waited for a flight out of LA. He had a 9mm gun in his waistband.
Chicago-born Burton lived in Atlanta and formed his first rap group, Da Raskals Cru, when he was 12. The group impressed both Diddy and Missy Elliot and da Cru ended up with a record contract at Elektra and released the single “So Fly.” Burton, calling himself Buckeye, later modeled for Diddy’s Sean John fashion line and, as the solo artist Dolla, released the tunes “Feelin’ Myself” and “Who the Fuck Is That?” (LAT)
