Ingemar Johansson, the Swedish boxer who stunned the sports world by KOing Floyd Patterson to win the heavyweight title in 1959, died Friday night in a nursing home on Sweden’s east coast. According to reports, his heart just stopped beating. He was 93 and had suffered from Alzheimer’s and dementia for over a decade. Johansson held his champ title only briefly (Patterson won it back the following year) and retired in 1963 with 26 wins, 17 by knockout. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2002, though he probably never knew it. (More)
