Comedian Richard Jeni was found fatally wounded in his West Hollywood apartment yesterday when police responded to a woman saying her boyfriend had shot himself. A loaded revolver was next to his body. Jeni died at the hospital sometime later. There are rumors he was ill. He was 45. Brooklyn-born, Cable Ace award-winning Jeni was number 57 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 greatest standups of all time; he reportedly appeared more times on the Tonight show than any other comic, beginning when Johnny Carson was host; he wrote material for Chris Rock’s hosting gig at the Oscars; he had three HBO Comedy Hour specials; his Crazy from the Heat special on Showtime attracted the highest ratings in that network’s history; and he acted in several movies, including The Mask and Burn Hollywood Burn. Obviously, life will be a little less amusing now. (see Shecky magazine)
