Singer Frankie Laine, who sold more than 100 million records in a 50-year career, died of heart failure after hip-replacement surgery yesterday in San Diego. He was 93. Originally a jazz singer and one of the first white guys to embrace R&B, Laine switched to popular music with the encouragement of arranger Mitch Miller. Laine’s big soaring vocals are immediately recognizable on “Jezebel,” “That’s My Desire,” and the theme songs from TV shows Mule Train and Rawhide and the movies High Noon and Blazing Saddles.
