From Soap Opera Digest: “Nick Santino, 47, who portrayed All My Children‘s Officer Anton (1998-2001) and Guiding Light‘s Father Soto (in 2002), committed suicide on January 25 in his Manhattan condo shortly after being forced to euthanize his beloved pit bull mix rescue dog Rocco.” The New York Post reports that his suicide note read: “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend. Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”
Now, I’m not really what you would call an animal person. I mean, yeah I get a little gooey when I see pictures of bunnies and sea lions frolicking together as BEST FRIENDS on the internet, but I cannot fathom what poor Nick was going through. Obviously he suffering from depression, or he was chemically imbalanced, or there were other issues at work, right? I don’t really understand because it’s so completely alien to my nature. I guess I was sort of hoping to start a dialogue here about people and their pets, and if anyone out there can enlighten me about what Nick was thinking. I don’t know. It’s pretty sad and disturbing and I can’t stop thinking about this poor guy.
One final note from the Post: “A member of the condo board that soap actor Nick Santino said pressured him to euthanize his pit bull — a ‘betrayal’ that drove him to suicide — refused to accept any responsibility for the double tragedy yesterday.’I’m sorry the man is dead,’ board member Marilyn Fireman barked to The Post, ‘But it has nothing to do with the pet policy.'” WOW. That is ICE COLD.
