Danny Flores aka Chuck Rio, the man who shouted “Tequila!” in the 1958 hit instrumental, died last Tuesday of pneumonia at Huntington Beach Hospital. He was 77. The song, recorded by Chuck Rio and The Champs, was the throwaway B-side to “Train to Nowhere,” but became arguably the best-known instrumental of all time (and a karaoke favorite). The song went to number one in three weeks and stayed on the charts for five. It won a Grammy in ’59 for best R&B performance. “I can honestly tell you he never got tired of playing that song,” Flores’ wife said. (More)
