Alex Toth, brilliant but underused comic book artist, died last week at home in Burbank. He was 77. “His style was clean and simple,” said fellow artist Jamie Hernandez. “There was no extra line, and every line was in the right place.”
Slim Aarons, photojournalist who was really good at capturing the rich and famous at play, died last week of a heart attack at home in Montrose, New York. He was 89. He once said he made a career out of “photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”
Vince Welnick, the last of the Grateful Dead’s keyboard players, died Friday in Sonoma County. He was 51. His death only adds to the legend of the Curse of the Grateful Dead Keyboard Player. Welnick had replaced Brent Mydland, who died of a drug overdose in 1990. He had replaced Keith Godchaux, who died in a car accident in 1980. And he had replaced the Dead’s original keyboard guy Pigpen McKernan, who died of a liver condition at 27 in 1973. Spooky.
