Lew Anderson, who played the mute, bicycle-horn-honking clown Clarabell on the Howdy Doody Show in the 1950s, died Sunday of prostate cancer in Hawthorne, New York. He was 84. Along with the horn, Anderson also wielded a seltzer bottle, which brings to mind the motto attributed to that other TV clown, Chuckles, and intoned at his memorial service on The Mary Tyler Moore Show: “A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.”
