Sad to say that British director and screenwriter Val Guest has died at 94. Among his many films are a number that this editor counts among his favorites: 1960’s Expresso Bongo, 1961’s The Day the Earth Caught Fire, and 1967’s Casino Royale (yes, there’s a remake on the way). Not to mention ’55’s The Quartermass Xperiment and ’70’s When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth. It’s a small world, and Fenton Bailey says of Guest that “our lives intersected on Blue Movie Britain, a documentary tribute to saucy end-of-the-pier capers such as the Carry On movies and one of Val’s masterpieces, Confessions of a Window Dresser.” Last June, on the occasion of Blue Movie Britain screening at the American Cinematheque in LA, Bailey posted some remarks about the legendary director.
