Robert Hegyes, who played wisecracking Brooklyn high-school student Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein on the 1975-1979 ABC sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, died yesterday from cardiac arrest at JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey, where he was taken after suffering a heart attack at his home in Metuchen. He was 60. Although his Sweathog character on the popular series was a Puerto Rican Jew, Hegyes was actually of Hungarian and Italian descent. After the sitcom ended, he played Chico Marx in a national touring production of Groucho with his Kotter co-star Gabe Kaplan in the title role, and later was a recurring character on the ’80s police drama Cagney and Lacey. He also performed stand-up and tried his hand at writing screenplays.
