Richard Fleischer, the man who directed 1952’s The Narrow Margin, one of the great noir films (or the best B-movie ever), died Saturday of natural causes at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He was 89. The son of animator Max Fleischer, who created the Betty Boop and Popeye characters, Richard Fleischer’s films also included Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Boston Strangler, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Fantastic Voyage, Barabbas, Soylent Green, Che!, Compulsion, Doctor Doolittle, Mandingo, and Conan the Destroyer. He was “a true Hollywood legend,” intoned the California governor.
