Etta James, until this minute the greatest living female blues singer, died today at a hospital in Riverside, California. She was 73 and had been suffering from leukemia. The legendary star is rightfully famed for her magnificent recording of “At Last” but, as Alex Balk at The Awl notes, her musical repertoire is expansive and includes everything from blues to gospel to R&B to standards. Today is stormy Friday.
