Sheree North, the actress whose measurements were an exact duplicate of Marilyn Monroe’s, died unexpectedly after surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles last week. She was 72. The platinum blonde initially was groomed as a glamor girl when she came to Hollywood and her likeness to Monroe qualified her to be the replacement for the chronically tardy star in the 1955 film How To Be Very, Very Popular. North was a fine actress as well as a hottie but had a hard time overcoming her pin-up appeal to prove it. But she managed to get good roles on stage, in the movies, and on television. She had a long career, but may be best known to younger viewers as Kramer’s mother, Babs, on Seinfeld and as Lou Grant’s lounge-singer girlfriend, Charlene, on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, the highlight of that series’ post-Rhoda years.
