The Algerian-born French philosopher, Jacques Derrida, founder of the school of deconstructionism, died Friday of pancreatic cancer at 74. His work focused on language, and he argued that the traditional way we read texts makes a number of false assumptions and that they have multiple meanings which even their author may not have understood. Which, if we interpret that correctly, means Derrida might not have been aware that his argument might actually have claimed that all assumptions are true and have only one meaning. Or perhaps we are misunderstanding what we’ve written here and Derrida is in fact alive. Or not. (Yahoo!)

People walk around or stop to look at or whisper a prayer to or laugh out loud at a giant bouquet of flowers in the middle of the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. It’s laid on top of Rodney Dangerfield’s star. We call that respect. Much farther away on the Boulevard, in the opposite direction, people have laid sundry mementos, wreaths, notes, Superman dolls on the star belonging to Christopher Reeve, who died yesterday.
