Yep, 2000. Now Elizabeth Banks’ reboot has its cast featuring Kristen Stewart as one of its angels and her two fellow angels will be played by Naomi Scott, who starred with Banks in last year’s Power Rangers, and British actress Ella Balinksa (Midsomer Murders). In the original, Bill Murray was Bosley, a role Banks will now take on.
The original TV series upon which the film is based aired on ABC for five seasons, from 1976 to 1981. Banks seems like a good fit since she produced and eventually directed the Pitch Perfect films, which proved to be girl-powered box-office catnip. Her comic sensibility should come in handy as she updates the franchise for a new generation.
Stewart doesn’t seem like a first choice for me, unless Banks decides to let the star play an angel that is, as Stewart once described herself on SNL,
All of the angels have been represented on-screen as straight. Now that more and more blockbusters are getting LGBTQ representation, Charlie’s Angels has a chance to be “SO GAY”.
Naomi Scot is also set to star as Jasmine in Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of Aladdin.
Banks told Variety.
“This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi, and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”
How gay it will be is anybody’s guess?
