Intriguing YouTube rant on the subject of the LGBT community’s reaction to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ performance at the Grammys. Some people in the gay community have voiced their frustration that he’s getting praise because of his privilege – that “as a straight, white, cisgendered male standing up for equality, it somehow ignores the voice of the queer people who’ve been fighting for this for years.” In other words: Thanks, but no thanks. We’ll handle this. But of course criticizing allies for trying to help isn’t the answer. They aren’t hurting our cause. Watch the video and tell me what you think, because this extends way beyond Maclemore. It’s any straight person who considers themselves an ally. Why, I remember criticizing Lady Gaga for declaring “Born This Way” a gay anthem. So there’s a lot to chew on here.
