10) Obsessed with S -Town Podcast
Tom delved in to the twisty & turny Southern gothic-ish tale of John B Macklemore on S – Town. S – Town is produced by Brian Reed of This American Life and Julie Snyder of Serial, and it has EVERYTHING. Depression! Suicide! Horology! Unrequited homosexual love! Tattoos & piercings! S&M! Cyanide poisoning! Gay phone sex lines! I think I’ll be tuning in!
9) Stayin’ Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of the Bee Gees
The Grammys saluted the brothers Gibb last weekend, and while we all agree the Bee Gees and the Gibb brothers are amazing, we were divided on how well their hits translated being sung by a younger generation. Performers included Nick Jonas, Pentatonix, DNCE (two Jo Bros!), Tori Kelly, Celine Dion, and more. You can watch the entire show on CBS.com!
8) A Trio of Terrible Restaurant Reviews
We discuss three of the most terrible, scathing – yet COMPLETELY delicious – restaurant reviews from around the globe including Paris’ Le Cinq, London’s Sexy Fish, and New York City’s Trump Grill.
7) Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen
We’re divided once again over Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen. Tom saw it last weekend and LOVED it, but Fenton also saw the show and wasn’t so convinced. YOU can see it on the Great White Way in New York City NOW at the Music Box Theater.
6)Is Melania Trump a Fairytale Prisoner by Choice?
Melania Trump seems to be MIA from her duties as FLOTUS, so how are we supposed to know anything about her? By stalking her Twitter, of course! Actually writer Kate Imbach from medium.com did the digging for us, and discovered from Melania’s personal twitter – which she quit posting photos to just before her deplorable husband announced his candidacy – she may just be a fairytale prisoner by CHOICE. Read Kate’s article and dissect Melania’s twitter on medium.com.
5) Harry Styles’ New Single “Sign of the Times” is EVERYTHING!
Harry Styles is off on a ’90s supergroup tear. His first single “Sign of the Times” debuted last week and listening to the 5+minute jam, one can’t help but be reminded of ’90s rock ballads Oasis‘ “Champagne Supernova,” Space Hog‘s “In the Meantime” …or maybe we go back further to late ’70s Bowie (YES, I SAID IT).
4) Heads Together: Lady Gaga & Prince William
Did you guys know that Lady Gaga & Prince William are Skype buddies? Neither did we until the video popped up in the middle of the night on Facebook! Gaga looks CHIC AF in her best 1970s mom drag, and Prince William looks HOT in his handsome blue sweater. It’s all for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (that’s Prince Harry and Kate Middleton for us Yanks) and Prince Harry‘s Heads Together campaign to help end the stigma of mental health.
3) Mystery Science Theater 3000
Mystery Science Theater 3000 has been REBOOTED on Netflix (stream now)! James St. James informed us of his theory of how the original series helped to popularize the notion of camp (that something is so bad it is good) as well as the idea that everyone is a critic. This led to Trump and the coming apocalypse. Very interesting theory!
2) Seriously, the Guy Has a Point: The Fuss Over the Fearless Girl
We were all thrilled with the ‘Fearless Girl’ statue staring down the famous ‘Charging Bull’ on Wall Street in New York City. It seemed like a strong feminist statement with even Mayor de Blasio tweeting “Men who don’t like women taking up space are exactly why we need the Fearless Girl.” But that was before we knew that SHE was actually an advertisement for the State Street Global Advisors Gender Diversity Index that trades under the the ticker symbol “SHE”, AND it changes the meaning of the ‘Charging Bull’! We discuss Greg Fallis‘ article Seriously, the Guy Has a Point.
1) Japan’s Dick Day!
It’s festival season, and it seems all anyone can talk about is Coachella, but did you know that the first Sunday of April is always the Kanarmara Penis Festival in Japan? Yep! According to the BBC, the festival is believed to have roots in the 17th century, when prostitutes are said to have prayed for protection from sexually transmitted infections at Kawasaki’s Kanamara shrine. Today, the festival reportedly raises awareness about safe sex practices and fundraises for HIV prevention. Head over to the Huffington Post for pics of the festivities!
Listen in at 4:00PM EST and again at 4:00 PST (7 PM EST) on SiriusXM!
