That damn wall is so crucial to Trump’s base that he can’t survive unless he does everything in his power to deliver on his promise to build it. That’s why he seeded the 35-day government shutdown, that’s why he declared a national emergency to get wall funding, and that’s why he threatened to close the border last week before backing off. And that’s why he forced Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen out of her job.
You might remember Nielsen; she is that icy blond who put babies in cages, traumatized children for life, and then lied to Congress about what she had done.
She walked into a meeting with Trump on Sunday night to discuss “a way forward” and walked out unable to get her resignation letter out before POTUS tweeted the news. The next day, Trump fired Secret Service Chief Randolph Alles in what The New York Times is calling “the purge”.
History will remember Nielsen as the Cabinet member who presided over the forced separation of migrant children from their families, leading to such devastating worldwide reaction that Trump was forced to abandon the policy. And yet, now it seems that Trump and his vampiric white nationalist troll, Stephen Miller thought that she just wasn’t tough enough. It’s hard to imagine how Trump could be any more extreme on immigration than he already is. But it’s not hard for Miller to imagine.
In fact, based on reports from CNN and NBC, Trump wants to reinstate the family separation approach. Trump had asked Nielsen to close the ports of entry along the border and to stop accepting asylum seekers.
The late-night hosts had some lovely parting messages for Nielsen:
Goodbye, Kirstjen. Whoever replaces you permanently is going to have some very big cages to fill.
Stephen Colbert: (referring to a CNN):
Now, Nielsen’s departure is not a total shock. Reportedly, for weeks, Nielsen has felt ‘in limbo’. Limbo is the right word here, because we’ve all been watching just how low she can go.
Nielsen said that this was the right time to step down and she looks forward to spending more time separating her family.
Nielsen is leaving this White House with her reputation in tatters. Remember, she was the face of the Trump administration’s family separation policy, where kids were split from their parents and kept in cages. So basically, the only job she can get now is working for R. Kelly.
