Queer female athletes have been breaking new ground lately. Earlier this week, Alison van Uytvanck and Greet Minnen Belgian pair tennis players became the first real-life couple to play together at Wimbledon and they called for more support in the sport for same-sex couples, adding that it would help male players to come out of the closet.

WNBA pro-basketball player Sue Bird of the Seattle storm published an op-ed essay in The Players’ Tribune titled So the President F*cking Hates My Girlfriend (and 10 Other Things I Want You to Know Before the World Cup Semifinals) calling out Trump and defending her girlfriend Megan Rapinoe, star of the U.S. women’s soccer team. Bird said her mission wasn’t to make a political statement, she just wanted to show her support for Rapinoe and the rest of the U.S. women’s national team. Bird:
My girlfriend was putting American soccer, women’s sports, equal pay, gay pride and TRUE LOVE on her back, all at once.

This week, the magnetic, lavender-haired Rapinoe scored two crucial goals against France, taking the American team to the finals in the World Cup. Rapinoe also found the time to annoy Trump and tight-assed television journalist Piers Morgan. This year’s Women’s World Cup semi-final between the USA and Britain was the most watched European broadcast this year. Team USA is poised to play its way into World Cup history.
Rapinoe made headlines and pissed off POTUS by announcing that she would not attend a White House ceremony if the USA team wins the World Cup. Rapinoe, a true patriot, said:
I think that I’m particularly, uniquely and very deeply American. If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, the song and the anthem, and what we were founded on, I think I’m extremely American. Maybe you don’t agree with every single way that I do it, and that can be discussed. I know that I’m not perfect. I think I stand for honesty and for truth and for wanting to have the conversation and for looking at the country honestly and saying that, yes, we are a great country and there are many things that are so amazing, and I feel very fortunate to be in this country. I would never be able to do this in a lot of other places.
But also, that doesn’t mean that we can’t get better. And that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t always strive to be better. This country was founded on a lot of great ideals, but it was also founded on slavery. I think we just need to be really honest about that and be really open in talking about that so we can reconcile that and hopefully move forward and make this country better for everyone.

The U.S. Women’s soccer team will have competition on Sunday when they go in the finals against The Netherlands. Two Men’s matches, Copa América and Concacaf Gold Cup, will also be playing their final games on Sunday. Rapinoe called it a “ridiculous and disappointing” distraction.

Dead-beat, draft-dodging Donald tweeted:
….in our Country’s history, and the poverty index is also best number EVER), leagues and teams love coming to the White House. I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job! We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!
