A retired Canadian police officer, who now lives in Los Angeles, won a contest sponsored by BioArts International explaining why his rescue dog, Trakr, should be cloned. “Once in a lifetime,” wrote James Symington in his entry, “a dog comes along that not only captures the hearts of all he touches but also plays a private role in history.” His German shepherd, Trakr, helped search for victims in the World Trade Center debris following 9/11. “Trakr’s story blew us away,” said BioArts’ CEO. Dog and master’s reward was five identical puppies cloned from Trakr, delivered a few days ago. Symington plans to raise the pups to be search-and-rescue dogs like their dad. Of course, cloning has its detractors and this case has opened up a can of Alpo. (via LA Times)
