House Speaker Kevin McCarthy wouldn’t say if he’d still supports Trump in ’24 after a New York jury found him liable for battery and defamation in a civil lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll.
McCarthy told reporters at the White House, as he was leaving an Oval Office meeting with President Biden,
You know what, I’ve been in this meeting — let me find out what happened.”
Find out what happened? A former POTUS you support was found guilty of sexual assault and defamation. He’s running against the guy you just met with, moron!
Advice columnist E. Jean Carroll testified that Trump raped her in a department store dressing room in the 1990s. After less than three hours of deliberation, the jury found the Trump liable for sexual abuse and said he owes $5 million in total damages to Carroll.
Trump called the verdict (IN ALL CAPS!)
A DISGRACE… A CONTINUATION OF THE GREATEST WITCH HUNT OF ALL TIME!”

Meanwhile, others in the GOP are saying it wasn’t fair because it was a New York jury. They still support a man found guilty of sexual assault. They barely care, and then only if voters do…
I certainly don’t believe that Donald Trump abused anyone…
It isn’t gonna make much of a difference.”
–Rep. Matt Gaetz
It makes me want to vote for him twice.”
–Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville

I’d much rather have a president that doesn’t have that history…
[the verdict] is not even disqualifying to the American people.”
–GOP Sen. Kevin Cramer
That jury is a joke…
The whole case is a joke”
–GOP Sen. Marco Rubio
I think the New York legal system is off the rails when it comes to Donald Trump.”
–GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham
He said he didn’t do it.
… It’s a New York jury, too.”
–Florida Sen. Rick Scott
People who love him will still support him and people who don’t, won’t.
I just think it’s too early to tell what the effect will be if there will be any effect at all.”
–GOP Sen. John Cornyn
But Mitt Romney said that the verdict is a signal that Trump isn’t fit to serve,
The jury reached their decision and I hope the jury of the American people reach the same conclusion: we need a different nominee to be the nominee for president.
He is in no position to be the president of the United States.”
–Nevada Sen. Mitt Romney
The jury spoke and I respect the jury.
I think he showed a lot of disrespect for the jury and the court… The way he treated them, he got what he deserved.”
–GOP Rep. Don Bacon
Let’s hope he continues to get what he deserves.
Meanwhile, the GOP continues to hold the country hostage over the debt, gun control and a culture war, designed to distract and divide.
Even Republican senators who expressed unease about the verdict wouldn’t rule out supporting Trump if he becomes their presidential nominee. https://t.co/Mz2DTorL2S

Donald Trump’s angry rant about the verdict is exactly what you would expect:
