Parade magazine, not the most cutthroat Sunday-supplement publication, put Tom Cruise on its cover yesterday with an interview conducted by Dotson Rader, not the most cutthroat interviewer. So because the predictable cover image showed a laid-back, toothy Tom, we were surprised to find the story inside wasn’t strictly puff. In fact, it was downbeat, rehashing his broken marriages, his feuds with Brooke Shields and Matt Lauer, his couch-jumping on Oprah, and allowed Cruise to whine – in a lackluster, grammatically awkward way – about his unpleasant relationship with his father. The story didn’t pick up until the very end, when Rader had this brief but chilling account of meeting Katie Holmes:
Before I left Cruise, he introduced me to Katie Holmes, who is about 5 foot 10 (he’s 5 foot 7) and pretty. She wore a large diamond engagement ring. She seemed dazed, passive and vacant. She never stopped smiling. The minute she appeared, Cruise’s now-familiar public mode of behavior returned. He began hooting how beautiful she was, touching and kissing her like a teenage boy on his first backseat date, aware that he was being watched.
