Earlier this year London-based performer Pretty Miss Cairo was in the finals to represent RPDG as the UK’s drag ambassador and caused scandal when she not only got her #RuBalls out in front of the judges and floored the competition but managed to dramatically photobomb reality TV star Sam Faiers.
Some wondered whether it was the end of the road for the half-Egyptian princess but life is on the up it would seem. Miss Cairo has been adopted as a protege by East London drag star Jonny Woo and is starring in his current show TRANSFORMER among other projects.
We caught up with the stripping siren over espresso martinis at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival…
SO! Pretty Miss Cairo! We love the heels.
Thanks, they’re Privileged. I want EVERYTHING on their site, hint hint.
Do you look back on the UK Drag Ambassador contest fondly?
It was a fun time for me, I was going around London on the sides of buses in a campaign with Ru herself which was amazing. A lot of people judged me for going full-frontal in the semi-finals, but you’ve got to be yourself I guess and unashamed of your body!
So it wasn’t a costume malfunction?
Well actually, I’m not going to lie – it was! But work with it, these things happen, thank God I’m sexy and a natural stripper!
So what are you doing up here in Edinburgh?
I’ve just come back from Latitude Festival and a week stint in Rotterdam where I was bringing queer culture to the city and right now I’m starring in Jonny Woo’s show TRANSFORMER.
TRANSFORMER is great fun, it’s all about Lou Reed’s seminal rock album, and we take all those famous songs like Walk On The Wild Side and Perfect Day and turn them into a crazy cabaret show! We hit London next month actually at the Soho Theatre.
Did Jonny Woo spot you through the Drag Ambassador competition?
No, he’s been eyeing me up for years – ha! I first met Jonny Woo through the Fabulous Russella, who I think was a “Woo Superstar” back in the day. It’s funny because I feel like a “Woo Superstar” now and I play Warhol Superstar Candy Darling in TRANSFORMER (below).
We saw on Twitter you were dressed like the Statue of Liberty the other day.
Yes, that’s a separate act I’m developing about systematic racism and Police Brutality in the US which I am hoping will be booked in New York when I go away to the States for two weeks at the end of September.
It’s a great costume.
Thanks, I stayed up all night sewing it! I also made most of my costumes and wigs in the RPDR contest, it’s all part of the process for me.
So you’re not just a pretty face!
Drag for me has always been about attacking social stigma whether that be about sex work or strippers rights, equality for every race or looking at the marginalisation within our queer and LGBT communities. I write articles for magazines as well as giving lectures to students on gender related issues and depression.
And of course these are all very important issues. It looks like you’re being called by someone over there..!
That’s our producer Julie-Ann yes, she better have a bottle of Prosecco waiting for me!
TRANSFORMER hits Soho Theatre from 15-19 September. More Info.
