As the Democrats continue to map out their strategy of “contrast rhetoric” for the November elections, several Democratic candidates now seem skittish about aligning themselves too closely with President Obama, whose approval numbers remain in the low to mid 40’s. The memories of the Obama administration’s poor track record concerning their support for senate races remain fresh on the mind (i.e., the against-all-odds election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts last January). For his part, President Obama’s role appears to have been relegated to that of cheerleader and fundraiser-in-chief at events for the well-heeled and well connected. And oddly enough, the word in Democratic circles is that many candidates would indeed love a presidential visit, but it is former President Bill Clinton they hope will ride to their rescue, not Obama. Both Bill Clinton and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, consistently have stronger approval ratings than President Obama and President Clinton’s prowess on the campaign trail is legendary. So the “comeback kid” is being asked to come out and parlay in the political sandbox one more time. And playing the hero by rescuing the Democrats from a disastrous mid-term election would most likely send the approval ratings for both Clintons into the stratosphere, not to mention, repositioning Hillary into a dominant political position once again.
