We’ve been loving the Brit punk band Towers of London since frontman Donny Tourette scaled a wall to free himself from the confines of the UK Celebrity Big Brother house, then guest-edited the 3AM blog with profanity, slagging media darlings the Arctic Monkeys. Plus we like the music the band makes. Turns out the guy who produced and directed the Bravo UK doc series on the Towers, Dave Hills, is the same guy who directed Porno Valley, the popular WOW UK series about the porn industry in California. So we rang up Hills in London to get an outtake from the Towers series and to ask Hills the difference between punk and porn. He obliged. Click here to watch a clip of the band telling why they named themselves Towers of London, then jump to read why Hills chooses punk over porn.
Dave Hills says:
“From my point of view as a maker of documentary series, the punks love to be filmed more than the porn stars and this makes the punk shows better, and my life more fun while I’m making one. They punks have a message which they want to share, albeit a simple and possibly childish one. No matter how ridiculous or pointless their affectations of rebellion are, they love to be seen in action. The more you provide the oxygen of publicity for their antics, the brighter the riot burns. After finishing the series, I wondered how the band could motivate themselves to continue getting out of bed to spit on people and punch them once principle photography had finished. I mean, what’s the point of creating anarchy in the UK if nobody’s fiming?
“Shooting a doc series about porn is virtually the opposite experience. The more you film the porn stars, the more irritated they become. On top of which, they are less genuine than posh boy punks. You just can’t believe them when they tell you how much they love their job, and claim the fact that both their parents reside in the state penitentiary is irrelevant to their choice of career. Do you think Prince William would choose to spend his life worrying about getting wood while naked in front of a bunch of hairy-arsed crew, with his sexual partner bitching at him to not look at them as if they were his girlfriend/boyfriend?”
