With the majority of polls showing that the president’s approval rating continues to languish in the low 40s, the Obama administration seems desperate to have somebody to attack instead of constantly having to defend its own record. So yesterday David Axelrod shot off the first salvo of the campaign by directly attacking Mitt Romney, even though the Republican nomination race is far from over. And if the best Axelrod can come up with is a weak pot-meet-kettle charge of “flip-flopping,” then the Democrats really should be worried. The attack seemed only to serve as a reminder of Obama’s own many flip-flops and broken promises. The comments section of The Huffington Post began to swarm with long lists of the president’s switched positions and backtracks on everything from gay marriage to the closing of GITMO. (Yes, at one time Obama was actually “unequivocally” supportive of gay marriage until he decided that wouldn’t suit his desires for political advancement, and came out against gay marriage). Not to mention, by singling Romney out at this early stage in the race, they only serve to elevate him. And if you are going to risk looking desperate by attacking early, then at least attack your opponent with a charge that your own candidate is not so blaringly guilty of!
